Traffic delay expected on 140th Avenue SE
Jan 13, 2003 --
EXPECT traffic delay.
The King County Road Services Division will begin work this week on the $20-million project to improve a 1.4-mil stretch of 140th Avenue SE between SE Petrovitsky Road and SE 197th Place in the Fairwood community. This project follows a series of road improvements completed last year along the major north-south arterial located between Renton and Kent.
“The variety of improvement slated for this vital transportation corridor will significantly improve traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks at key intersections,” King County Executive Ron Sims said.
“In addition to providing added capacity, this project will include the construction of sidewalks and bike lanes, which will expand travel options and safety for both pedestrians and bicyclists along the busy arterial,” Sims added.
During construction, which is expected to be completed by the fall of 2004, the section of 140th Avenue SE will be widened from two lanes to four lanes. A continuous two-way left turn lane will also be added to improve overall traffic flow through the corridor.
The corridor currently serves about 20,000 vehicles daily.
Other improvements include improved lighting, drainage systems, wetland mitigation, landscaping and utility coordination.
“While we expect some periodic traffic delays during construction, the county will add traffic control measures such as flagging so we can keep impacts to a minimum, especially during the morning and afternoon commutes,” Road Services Division Manager Linda Dougherty said.
