Metro King beefs up bus security
Jun 11, 2003 --
THE METROPOLITAN King County Council last week unanimously approved a transit security policy that aims to improve safety both aboard buses and at regional park-and-ride facilities.
The security policies sought to increase the number of transit security officers available to respond to incidents. It also spelled out for passengers the consequences of violating the Transit Code of Conduct, especially when it comes to fare evasion or disruptive behavior.
Metro will increase the number of full-time officers in its Transit Police unit by shifting some of the resources now used to pay for part-time officers. It will also work on improving its system for officers to report incidents.
Through the collaboration of the suburban members of the Regional Transit Committee, local cities will work more closely with Metro Transit Security to share incident reports taken at park and ride lots. The sharing of information will enable transit security to better protect parked vehicles and ensure prompt response to incidents.
"Everyone using public transportation in King County should feel safe when they get on a bus," said Councilmember Rob McKenna, chair of the Regional Transit Committee. "These guidelines were put together after listening to drivers, passengers and police, to ensure that the agencies responsible for keeping people safe work together to make it happen."
"With this policy, bus drivers will know there is security nearby if there is an incident on their bus," McKenna added. "Riders will know what will happen if they ignore the rules of conduct on the bus. And people using Park and Rides should feel safer in leaving their vehicles and taking the bus. Everyone has to work together to ensure that riding King County Metro is a safe and pleasant experience. "

Was wondering if Metro had any public records of incidents that occured between the driver and patron who was having a medical situation. To which the driver was at fault for misconduct of the whole situation. Example, if the driver told the patron to leave for having some type of attack on the bus. To which the patron had no control of the situation, and the driver did not ask for assistance?
Thank you for your time. |
