SHAREYOURTHOUGHTS: Who Pays for Sex-Abuse Suits?
Sep 23, 2003 --
WHEN IT comes to the decision of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle to settle the sex-abuse suits filed against it, a Seattle reader asks: “Where would it get the money? I regularly donate to my Church, in answer to letters of solicitations, which come regularly. Will the archdiocese dip into money collected from Sunday mass donations? Are we being asked to ‘pay’ for sins of priests? Should we?”

If your crappy little $10 bill helps your victims heal and find some kind of sancturary, is that money well spent? Of course, your money should only go to pay for the laurels of your priests, better attorneys, luxuries galore, valuable property, statues, stained glass, red wine and pope-mobiles. Instead of real action to move-ahead be-accountable and spiritually grow, you could just close your eyes and wish this all this away like it never happened. Oops, that ain't gonna work... that's how you got into this mess! |

I am so disgusted by the whole mess, I have re-examined my faith, and I am now embarrased and ashamed that I ever gave money to such a blatently sexist, judgemental, devisive, backwards organization. I have never felt more fulfilled, more free than when I dropped all that baggage and guilt. I encourage anyone else who is unhappy in their faith to ask themselves why they have adopted the religion they were taught without question, the same as every other religion in the world. The abandonment of old ideas is why we do not believe the world is flat, why we do not have slaves, why women vote, and why America itself exists! It was time for me to grow up and make my own decisions, so I abandoned the medival ideas of the Catholic Church, and I never felt such joy! |
