Seattle Medium
King County taxpayers may be eligible for tax credit
Jan 20, 2003 --
The Seattle Medium reports:
United Way of King County and the King County Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign are offering free tax-preparation services by trained volunteers at sites across King County.
While the service is open to all taxpayers, the campaign is specifically focused on serving people eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is the most effective anti-poverty tool offered by the federal government because it reduces the tax burden on low- and moderate-income earners, supplements their wages and makes work more attractive than welfare. Poverty is widely recognized as the root cause of homelessness, and the EITC helps many reduce the risk of homelessness.
The EITC campaign expects to complete some 4,500 returns in Bellevue, Beacon Hill, Burien, the Central District, Rainier Beach, downtown Seattle, White Center, Renton, Kent, SeaTac International Airport and Federal Way between Jan. 15 and April 15. Volunteers are providing tax preparation services in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian and Samoan.
