Publicize your event!

New SPOL Calendar Open for Business

Feb 15, 2003 -- The Seattle Press On Line Calendar features user-submitted events along with whatever catches the eagle eye of the editors. It's easy to add an event.

Because our system uses the universal iCalendar format, your event may be seen on many other sites. This is because the Publish & Subscribe feature makes it easy for us to link to outside calendars and for publishers of other calendars to link to ours. If you use Microsoft Outlook or Macintosh iCal, you can download our calendar and incorporate it in your time management application.

Naturally, all events submitted will be subject to review by the Seattle Press On Line staff. We will enforce a family-friendly policy.

If you need additional publicity for your event, consider a full-page, online ad linked from the calendar item. Your ad will appear in this space on its own page, with a optional outbound link to your external information. To create an ad, you'll just send text and graphic(s) to the advertising department. If you have HTML skills, we can instruct you on layout options and you can build your own ad to save money. More Info.

Adding an Event

Events should be added at least a week before the start date. Events disappear from the calendar a few days after the end date in the List view; they appear throughout the current month in the Month view.

We require that the person submitting the event provide a valid name, telephone and email address, which will not be published.

Descriptive contents are limited to about 100 words. Do not paste Microsoft text containing "smart quotes" or other extended characters into the forms. They're not web compatible and may cause your text to look funny. If you type in Word, for example, convert your text to plain text before using the forms, or just type your copy in the forms.

Web addresses for more information must be typed as "http://(the address)" as omitting http://... will cause browsers to seek the information on this site.

Accented letters from Western languages typed on your keyboard will work correctly. Do not type HTML in the forms. It will be removed by the system.

Public contact data helps people plan for your event. We will NOT answer questions about your event from the public.

Creating an Ad

If you do not have a web site, you can place a one-page ad on this site easily. You should allow two weeks for this procedure.

Go ahead and put your event into the calendar with a brief description.

Prepare your ad: Type your ad copy as plain text and save any graphics as JPEG images totaling not more than 100 Kbytes.

Send email to the editor describing the event. Be sure to identify the existing calendar item. Indicate whether you want us to create the ad or you will be providing HTML content. If the former, append the text of the ad.

We'll reply as soon as possible with further instructions.

Ads start at $25, plus creative services and extended schedules. Your ad will appear in this portion of the standard SPOL page.
