Restaurant ReviewsDining Out3 SquaresDec 01, 1999 -- Breakfast in Eastlake
Oatmeal. Steaming hot. It sticks to your ribs. It fights cholesterol. It's good for you. It's good. What better way to fortify yourself than breakfast at Louisa's Bakery and Cafe, 2379 Eastlake Ave E. On a winter morning, the windows are fogged with condensation. Inside it's warm and nourishing. The smell of baking bread and apple french toast. There are huge sticky pastries. A cinnamon roll is as big as a lunch. Eggs, omelettes, granola. On a weekday morning, it's quiet. Newspapers rustle. Conversation is subdued, tentative. Getting ready to meet the day. It's pure Seattle. It's really good.
Lunch in Fremont
You go to Paseo to eat pork. This little Cuban pork palace at 4225 Fremont Ave N puts together the finest sandwich this side of the ship canal--mayonnaise, cilantro, lettuce and a juicy, fat piece of grilled pork on a baguette. Order the rice and beans on the side; they're the best we've had barring those we ate at Dawn Mason's "Pay Off the Debt" party. Paseo beans are the palate-perfect side dish; fragrant and mild, they do not compete with your pork-eating pleasure. Paseo also cooks chicken, fish, prawns and scallops. Two eat well for $16 plus pop.
Dinner in Fremont
The Fremont Classic Pizzeria and Trattoria, 4307 Fremont Ave N, is a reasonably-priced, family-friendly Italian restaurant just up the hill from the center of the universe. Come in for traditional pasta dishes and great handcrafted pizzas. The antipastos are as big as a meal. The atmosphere is country Italian, with a little opera on the sound system. Paul and Erin Kohlenberg own the place. Paul runs the kitchen with imagination and attention to detail. Erin greets and seats diners. For last minute dinner plans, or out-of-town guests you want to impress, you can't go wrong at this friendly neighborhood trattoria.
