Parks Finds Money for Greenhouse Park Clean-Up

Lori Kinnear displayed plans for Greenhouse Park at a recent joint meeting of the Phinney and Greenwood Neighborhood Councils.
Jun 15, 2000 -- "We found the money for the Greenhouse Park clean-up," reports Dewey Potter, a spokesperson for the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation.

Park plans had been delayed when asbestos was discovered in the putty of the greenhouse windows, lead in the paint and insecticide residue in the dirt. Clean-up, which had to be completed before work on park construction could begin, was pegged at $200,000.

Potter says demolition contractors should be at work on the site by mid-July.

Greenhouse Park is a 2.2-acre largely undeveloped site at North 87th Street between Evanston and Fremont avenues. It was operated as a commercial greenhouse for several years before being acquired by the city last year. Development cost for the new park is estimated at $800,000 to $1 million and will be included in the Pro Parks levy slated for a vote this fall.
