Fire Routs Family From Ballard Home
Oct 23, 1998 --
An alert nighbor, Sammy, roused the Kiunya family out of bed just after Dawn October 9 when he saw smoke billowing from the roof of the tiny Ballard Home.
"I was on my porch smoking a cigarette, because I can't smoke in the house," Sammy said, "when I saw the smoke about a block away , so I went to see what was going on.
"It was early in the morning so I was afraid people were sleeping inside. Nobody answered when I banged on the door, so I walked around the house and banged on all the windows. That finally woke them up."
"There was no smoke in the house," Paul Kiunya explained, as he watched the firefighters chopping holes in the roof. "The fire started in an electrical box in the attic and it hadn't spread down stairs by the time the fire trucks arrived."
"We had no idea the house was on fire," Nellie told the Seattle Press. "If Sammy hadn't woken us, we wouldn't have known anything until the fire was much worse. He's really a hero to our family."
Ballard Engine Company responded within minutes to the first alarm called in on the cell phone of a passerby.
The Kiunya family, Paul and Nellie and their two children Faith and Hope are from Bethel, Alaska. They moved to Seattle so Nellie could complete her business degree at Seattle Pacific University. Paul is hoping to hire on in the mail room at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Caption: Fire aftermath: the Kiunya family retreived most of their possessions intact, but water, smoke, electrical damage and some gaping holes in the roof made their home uninhabitable. Above: Paul, Nellie, Faith and Hope.
