An Interview with Susan Powter

By Tom Herriman

Susan Powter
Apr 08, 1999 -- Susan Powter describes herself as a housewife who figured it out: "My husband had an 18-year-old girlfriend. I couldn't pay my bills. I had 2 kids under 2. I was 130 pounds overweight." And she was an alcoholic.

Today Powter is a best-selling author, a sought-after speaker and the star and producer of her infomercials. She has delivered her message of wellness, women's power and revolution to millions of viewers on late night TV infomercials and on the lecture circuit, including her recent appearance at The Seattle Women's Exhibition where I met with her just before her presentation to a crowd of 2,000. She has published six books, three of them New York Times best-sellers: Stop the Insanity, Food and The Pocket Powter. She is getting ready to take a one-woman show on the road.

Out of the spotlight, she has two teenage children and a baby. She recently moved to Seattle. "I raise three kids--that's my primary joy and job. I write books and produce videos. I also knit a lot. I'm a great photographer. And I just bought a 1964 VW bug and a restored VW mini-van with a hardwood floor."

She couldn't resist bragging about her fifteen-year-old son. She told me that in his research for a school paper, he discovered that Columbus was responsible for wiping out the entire tribe of 250,000 Arawak Indians in the Caribbean. "'Why are we honoring this man?' my son demanded in his paper."

Powter figured out that many of the problems faced by women are created or made worse by our patriarchal society. "Women are still the housekeepers and food buyers and cooks. I get up at five, write, cook, do the laundry, get the kids off to school, and then I go to work. I've never seen a man share equally in the responsibility of a home and family--society doesn't permit it.

"The patriarchy is the structure of the family, government, religion, education. This is the system that has destroyed the environment and poisons our food. Men have destroyed the planet. Get out of the sand box! Get off the playground!

"We need to change the system. It's the same message that Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony brought to us 100 years ago. They are the heroes, not me. Stanton wrote the Women's Bible and said the whole structure has to be destroyed and rebuilt.

Another thing Powter figured out is that "Weight loss diets don't work. You need to get exercise, and you need to stop eating bad foods like white sugar. We have a $276 billion food industry in this country that deliberately poisons the food they sell us with pesticides, coloring, chemicals and refined white sugar. My motto is: If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it."

And she figured out that alcoholism is a disease. "I'm sober and staying that way. But alcoholism is not a choice or a character defect. It's a progressive crippling disease. It's a major cause of rape and suicide and crime. Its our national problem.

"Eating properly supports sobriety. Alcoholics need internal healing: Alcoholism is in the genes. It's a physiological issue that has nothing to do with psychology. Some people just metabolize alcohol differently. They become addicts. The alcohol industry profits from their misery. Why do we permit a multi-billion industry that kills people?"

Powter tells her audiences, "If you want to change things, first you have to get well, then you have to get strong. To bring about change you need to be physically well, and you need healthy internal organs, especially the brain."

Hello. Enjoyed the interview w/Miss Powter. I came upon it while trying to find a phone or address for her corporation. I had not been aware of the fact that she had moved from Texas to Washingtom, whichc now explains why her old "800" number is no longer valid. This is the reason I am writing to you. I am wondering if Miss Powter still has a business set up for her tapes, videos and books. I became a listener of her message a couple of years ago and bought her program, "Give Me Five." Unfortunately, one of those cassette tapes has torn in two and thus I am seeking a replacement. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Good article. I've never had a weight problem, but I am an alcoholic. Susan's book was one of the first that I read that made sense. Now that I've been sober for more than 6months I'll be reading it again. I appreciate her candor and relate to having the disease while being a working mother of 2 children. I feel great. Thanks Susan.

I work out with Susan's "LEAN STRONG and Healthy" video. I love it. Her comment in this article "men destroy the planet" made me sad. She also said she has a fifteen year old son. What kind of message is she giving him? That he is destructive? He's very much needed...

Hi Susan. I just wanted to think you so much for writting "Stop the Insanity!" When it came out it changed me life. Now I find myself going back and reading it again and again.I also have two other of your books. My problem is that now I have a heard time getting back on track, I had a baby and I'm back to bad eating. The weight is back and I am looking to to you for some more insight.    well, i recently read Sober...and staying that way, in hope to understand about the disease that has effected so many people i love. i was in a very abusive relationship with an alcoholic. we sought help through detox, treatment centers, you name it, but your book really opened my eyes to the topic of the biochemistry of it all. and i'm very interested in learning more facts. i am doing a seminar or a special populations class at my college, there were many populations to choes from, but i've been effected by it in so many was i want to understand the diesase and let others too. i'm using parts of ypur book as my strongest reasonings. i just wanted to say i like what your trying to say.

Does Susan Powter have a e mail address which is available to the public? Iwould like to thank her for her books and the guts it takes to share her life. Her message is a strong one.

Where is Susan Powter? This is the freshest trail I have found in searching the net. All I get now is some relative of hers peddling powders and potions in her name. There is no way she lost 133 pounds by swallowing pills. It looks as though someone bought the rights to her name and voice and is now out there peddling quack cures rather than sensible eating and exercise. Susan Powter - where are you?

I just read "Stop the Insanity" after finding it in a 2nd hand bookshop, and wanting to read it for years. Susan Powter was very much ahead of her time when she wrote this and exposed the food (read "fat")-production industry that is causing a worldwide obesity epidemic. I also recommend "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser, for an eye-opening read that will keep you on the healthy-eating track. Good Health and Long Life to all, from the nuclear-free, non-GM, organic farming paradise of the world!

I've been using Susan's first 2 tapes since 1996 and I love them. I feel so good after each workout, and they really worked. I lost 50lbs in 4 months with working out every day. Now 6yrs later I reached a plateau with my weight and had bariatric surgery. So now I HAVE to exercise so I won't have loose skin and her tapes are the best. They're easy to understand and you don't have to be super-fit already to use them. I just want to know if she's going to do any tours on the southeast coast...like in Florida any time soon. I am such a huge fan. Also, I was wondering if she has a web site just about her or how we can e-mail her directly...not distributor sites or anything.

Hi Susan! My Weight Watcher's leader recently introduced me to several of your videos, and they are fabulous! Since Labor 2001, I have lost 101#, and only have 40 more # to go before I reach my goal weight. It's been a lot of hard work, but I'm getting there. I was wondering about the people who are in the video with you. How have they progressed with their own fitness or weight loss issues? Thank you Susan for motivating America!
Denise Dec 17, 2002 Seattle, WA Body Product Manufacturer
Susan, when your videos came out, I bought a couple. When your book came out, I read it. I soaked it up and loved it. I lost weight with it. But I only lowered fat - I didn't lower sugar. I was lean and feeling better than in high school. Life took a strange twist (moving out of the country, fostering a relative, emotional trauma) and I slowly gave into old habits. I recently found the Lean, Strong and Healthy video on Ebay and have it in my grubby hands again. It feels good to be inspired once more. Then, to find out that you are in my new area - WA, gets me more excited. I hope to run into you some day, give you a hug and thank you for all you have done for humankind.

Well, to begin with I would like to thank Susan like many people have in the past and will in the future. In 1994, Jan. I was 225lbs I began to read Ms. P's first book, even at 2AM by dim lamplight. I had many people make fun of me, but eight months later I had loast 80 pounds and was lookin real nice(wow-miracle). Sad to say I let my cousin borrow the book, he moved to FL (I was in NY at the time). I have never heard from or seen my book again:( I used the videos 5-6X/week. Well I am here in Brasil, near the ocean, my tapes grew mold and no longer function. My book is gone. and after I had my 3rd child I gained weight back- but lost a lot of will to continue- too many problems too write about! If anyone knows where I might be able to pick up an ebook I would appreciate it. I have been searching and it is hopeless for me. sandntorrecilla@hotmail.com Wishing you all the best for the holidays! Norma

i am 31, married, have two children 3 and 7 and have left my job to be a full-time caregiver to my 71 yr. old father who is terminally ill with prostate cancer. many life altering changes in the last couple of years. i stay stressed out and depressed a lot. staying at home has caused me to not get much exercise and therefore i have gained considerable amount of weight. i am wanting to purchase the complete Susan Powter Stop the Insanity weight loss program that I first saw several years ago on TV. can anyone help me with information on where to find this? I would also like to have Susan's personal website address. I need serious help. I currently weight 240 lbs. and have tried lots of diets, but I end up giving up on myself. I am afraid of having a heart attack. can you help??????????? thanks, tracey

I love Susan Powter and lost 40 pounds following her low-fat ideas. Unfortunately, I gained it back over time since living on low-calorie and low-fat diets is very difficult. Sure when you are losing, they are great, but it is very hard to maintain weight on these diets. May I suggest to you all something that I have found that has been AMAZING? Try cutting back on your carbohydrates and upping your protein, and even a little on your fat. You lose weight, and it is much easier to maintain this lifestyle! The "fat makes you fat" idea of the 1990's is not very accurate. Sugar, starches and carbohydrates are more to blame. I've lost 60 pounds and maintained after lowering my "carbs" and not the fat. Good luck to you all!

I bought 5 of the Give Me Five workout videos, & am searching the web to buy a couple more (gave one or two to family). I NEVER want to be without that workout, as it's THE BEST I've ever seen! And being only 30 minutes, it fits into my schedule! For fun, I'll often "talk" along with you -- I almost know ALL the words to the entire video! Thanks SO much for sharing what your knowledge of working out & eating right with us! B:)

I want to let you know that you have been had by susan powter. I have personal experience with this woman when I became involved in her most recent company, STI Group, Inc. I have developed a relationship with Susan, personally, and experienced her wrath of hell just recently in OKC. She is a liar, manipulator and con-artist to say the least. As a previous distributor of STI Group or STI Plus, I recently coordinated a free seminar for the partrons of OKC. The first was in June 2002 (at the Renaissance-downtown OKC) and the second was in July 2002 (Marriott Waterford, OKC) where Susan decided on the first show NOT TO GO ON STAGE and there were over 60 women that waited for over two hours to see her THEN she came back to OKC in July at the Waterford and decided not to go on for three shows out of nine and left for the airport to San Diego, five minutes before the last show on Sat. @ 6pm. Not only did I personally incurr the cost of the hotel bills, but SUSAN POWTER herself used my personal credit card to book and charge her room in San Diego after she left OKC. My bank is Bank of America and they have confirmed that she did in fact use my credit card FRAUDULANTLY (I have the documentation) but that she charged her room to my card!!! She is a phony and any chance I get to expose her for the fake and liar that she is I WILL DO. I have e-mail from her acknowledging this fact and that she would pay me back for the charge ... have not seen a dime. And not to mention phone records to her home in WA (little island) that she called my home and I called her home. I would love to expose her for what she REALLY is!!! I don't want the woman that believe in her to continue to believe in a FAKE .... she doesn't care about any fans and she certainly will not be of any success when she treats people that believe in her the way she has treated me (and 18 others I can give you by name) It's not right ... Renee Zuk Oklahoma City, OK Please contact me via e-mail, I'll give you all the documentation you need.

I first picked up Susan's book after my first divorce. She gave me hope, she gave me inspiration and she was 'real' to me. I can't speak about knowing her personally like some of you, but I can tell you that she changed my whole outlook on life. After reading her book, I got a hold of her exercise tapes, and I changed the way I looked and felt about myself. And Susan - she's a regular person.... just like you and me. And feelings aren't facts here really - you look at her now, and she's still lean, strong and healthy. That's a real testimony there to me. After all of these years, after all of the good and all of the crap that was handed to her, she still looks and lives the part she preaches about to us all. No one is perfect. I certainly am not. And I'm sure looking back, I would change a thing or two - or three :> but the bottom line is that she picked herself up from her bootstraps, had some pitfalls in between, but stands tall and strong and still speaks out about what she believes in. What is it that you believe in? Hopefully yourself as much as she believes in you. Because despite what other people say about her, that's all she really wants for you. To be lean, strong and healthy. To live the life that God meant you to live. To elevate yourself as a human being everyday. We all have that ability. That's what Susan did for me. And I thank her. I am no remarried for eight years now with two beautiful children. And although my body isn't perfect by far.... everyday I eat - I breath - I move. And if Susan were here right now, I would let her know that she touched one person's life. I don't think it's a game or a con. And I don't think she's manipulating people in any way. And that's really all I have to say about that.

Susan Powter has immense character. I read her book "stop the insanity" at a critical time in my own development and still dip into it from time to time. She gives in many ways, whilst making her own journey toward her own truth. For all she has given me I bless her path. May she receive as she has given. We are all "works in progress". Namaste.
Susan Oct 12, 2003 Canada homemaker
I bought Susan Powter's "Stop the Insanity" book at a second hand store(for 33 cents plus tax). It's the best deal I ever got, let me tell you. I'd seen her infomercials years ago when I was an anorexic/bulimic young woman and thought she probably was too; I figured no one can look like that without taking as many laxatives and vomitting as much as I was, so I basically dismissed her at that time. Then, nearly 20 years later, I bought the book. I am the mother of five healthy, wonderful children aged nearly 3 to 12. I decided I didn't want to be fat, unhealthy, and unfit anymore. On March 17,2003 I started reading her book and putting her ideas into motion. THEY WORK!!!!! It is now October 12, 2003 and so far I have lost 82 pounds -- by eating, breathing and moving!!!! Our nearby library has a few of her videos and books, so I signed them out and watched them and read them. I told my mom I wanted the recipe books for my birthday but she was so proud of me that she bought me two already and they're fabulous, she didn't have to pay a lot for them; she ordered them and they were $7.99 each(paper back). I found one of that videos second hand for $1.25 plus tax!!!! WOW!!! Such a deal, I was thrilled. I bought weights at a second hand store and at the dollar store (for the smaller ones). When whole wheat pasta goes on sale, I buy 40 boxes, I economize, this has not cost me a fortune, like so many diets do, I don't have the money to spend. People are definetly impressed. I was 260, I'm now 178 and the doctor says I should be 150, but we'll see where my body takes me, I already look so much betyter. I've gone from size 28 to size 16 so far. I got rid of the clothes, I don't want them in the house. I went to a second-hand store and bought 3 bags full of nice clothes for $30.00, they were having a sale where you could fill a large bag for $10.00, some of them are too small, I will fit into them soon, I'm determined. My goal is to look and feel good and to stay healthy, fit and trim after I've reached my goal. I don't care what the bad things are people are saying about her, I think she's fabulous, and I'm proof that it works!!!!

thank you Susan for your straight shooter approach to life... Just finished reading 'Sobber and staying that way"... Wow... Can I relate to it? AA is wonderful but I too had strong reservations about some aspects: ie. guilt trip, self loading, etc... I can do it and it makes so much sense.... the sugar cravings : oh boy... thanks for being so positive... keep up the good work... you are quite a gal!... Wish your tv program was shown Down Under.. Cheers mate. Renee

I think that Susan, you are fantastic, and I really apprieciate the fact that you are sharing your trials and tribulations with the rest of us so that we know we are not alone. You really give me inspiration because of both the way you are and the way you look.

Susan has a fantastic positive mental attitude. Last year, I lost 4 stone and it all began with my mind. As Susan says, "the most powerfull tool" when she lost her weight was her mind.

At the time I lived in Florida and never realy had time to read or watch them. Since I moved here to Canada, I have gained 60 lbs. (in 5 years).    How can you preach about weight loss, and physical fitness and respect for your body when you have covered you body in tattoos? Is this not total lack of respect for what god has given you?
Dan Fritscher Jan 30, 2004 Spokane, WA Software Engineer
Hmmmmmmmm. Chris Columbus was responsible for wiping out the entire tribe of 250,000 Arawak Indians in the Caribbean. I wonder why the Arawak's didn't just whack Chris over the head when they noticed the first 5,000 or 10,000 laying there dead. I think her kids a nut case just like his mother.
Tina Cart Jan 31, 2004 Sacramento, CA Secretary
To Dan F: I agree! I can just see Columbus going in there and for no reason whatsoever, just killing dead all those peaceful, spirit-filled Arawaks... Always a one-sided story, isn't it? Yep, he's a nutcase. And, I liked Susan's book on alcoholism, but after seeing her on Neil's show on FNC last night, I was scared! That woman IS insane! She's lost it completely, I guess it would happen to anyone that moved to "Seattle territory" though. Full of kooks! There was a time when she was attractive, maybe beautiful if she'd had some hair, but now she is scary looking!

I was just talking to my sis - telling her about Susan and how much I admire her - and have always followed her ideas, eating, exercise etc. - it is wonderful, the way all people should try and live their lives. Well, my sis informs me that Susan has reverted to her former lifestyle- that booze has ruined her - IS THIS TRUE?????

Lots of rumours...if you want the truth, go to Susan's website www.susanpowteronline.com and you'll be able to hear it straight from her.... She's still there, sharing fabulous information and inspiration, no gimmicks, just guts and a the REAL DEAL....

I have 2 of Susan's books and have never really taken the time to actually READ them. (I usually have my nose stuck in a novel.) I wish she would make some guest appearances on Oprah or a talk show. She doesn't get enough coverage here in New England. I think she is so totally enthusiastic about life. (This comes through loud and clear in her books.) I admire her greatly. I want to look like her. Christeena

I love Susan!!! Would love to hear her speak, lecture, motivate. I found her new website, but it is not responding to Email. I hope the rumors are not true. After all she has done for me I hope she isn't back on the bottle. Susan I hope you can respond to this so we know you are ok.
Steph Jul 28, 2004 Albuquerque Earth Mother
Geez you guys! Do you honestly think Susan is reading this sh*t??? This is a READERS COMMENTS page, as in COMMENT ON THE ARTICLE, not a SEND YOUR MESSAGE TO SUSAN thang. Doh! All this "Dear Susan", "Hey Susan", "Please Susan" - ENOUGH ALREADY!! If you want to get in touch with her go to the bloody www.susanpowteronline.com website and use the links there. Oh, and her last monthly Zine was FABULOSO! So I don't think it's likely that she's back on the booze....

I was just checking out a web site with Susan as a radical feminist. The animal farm, etc. I don't understand who this version of Susan Powter is. I just ordered a video on Yoga. I hope I wont be disappointed and I hope my purchase is not going to support any thing that is unethical or immoral. Thank YOu! Is Susan conducting exercise classes in Dallas anymore ? What is she doing these days?

I remember Susan Powter from her appearances on Oprah thtat I seen in the mid 90's. She wasn't really a big name over here as I remember but when I seen her DVD's on sale at Play.com I bought the whole set! BOY oh BOY was that a good investment or what! The strength thing is SO important. I hope she does well I really do. Yes Aerobics!
YesLoveIsAlive Oct 05, 2004 Maryland/WashD.C. teacher
Susan Powter does offer some great step aerobics tapes, but..unfortunately I have been doing them faithfully 6 days a week for 5 months, doubling them up so I exercise atleast an hour and I have not lost any inches. Granted,I have seen some progress in my stamina...but no size loss. I have cut down on my processed and sugary foods, increased the veggies to no avail. Should I be calorie counting, which Susan does NOT recommend? Someone, ,please advise.

YesLoveIsAlive - are you eating low fat? The key here is - DON'T restrict your calories unnecessarily - make sure you're eating a wide variety of good, healthy, low-fat, high-volume, preferably WHOLE foods (like brown rice, beans, veggies, fruit etc). Do the step aerobics, but also add in say 3 half-hour strength-training sessions a week. Get Susan's "Building Strength" or "Burn Fat & Get Fit" vids/DVDs for info on how to do this. You can also get her "Trailer Park Yoga" DVD from www.susanpowteronline.com which is a great all-round cardio and strength workout. Do cardio, do weights, eat low fat and whole, and you can't fail to lose inches!

Hello, enjoyed the article. About seven years ago I purchased the Stop The Insanity video tapes which included a book by Susan Powter on fat burning and dieting. It is the only exercise and eating plan that has worked for me in my lifetime. I have tried other exercise and eating plans but none have been as successful as Susan Powter's weight plan. Within these years, my book has been misplaced and the video exercise tape Stop the Insanity was destroyed because I used it alot. I have been trying to find out how to order more exercise tapes. Can you provide me with any info?

Hi, I've been following Susan's healthy eating tips but still have an overeating problem. Yes, I eat healthy food but unfortunately, I don't feel full. Before you know it, I feel pregnant from the quantity of food. What can I do? Is there certain food that will satiate my hunger faster and not cause stomach bloating/expansion?

Susan, I bought one of your exercise tapes back in the early 1990s. I love that exercise program, and I was wondering if you still have copies of the tape to sell. If you had it in DVD that would be great. I liked that take because the women and man on it worked at their own pace and ability level. Thank you,
