Chamber Picnickers Have One Track Minds

Jun 28, 2000 -- "We Want a Monorail" said members of the Fremont, Wallingford and University District Chambers of Commerce in an informal voice vote at their 19th annual Picnic at Gasworks Park June 21.

Jan Drago, the only actual City Council member in attendance wanted to talk about budget process, but most of the questions from the crowd centered on the monorail. Drago, one of 5 votes Council President Pageler was counting on to sink the pesky and popular train concept, said the city can't afford it and that the Electric Transportation Commission hasn't done a good job of presenting a coherent plan. Drago said some sort of further study might be in order. Later, Drago told The Seattle Press she favored a high tech high speed train running across the 520 bridge to link Seattle with the Eastside.

Mike Kreidler, candidate for the Democratic nomination for Insurance Commissioner and Mark Sidran, Seattle City Attorney also greeted the picnickers.
