Front Porches Are Back

Jun 28, 2000 -- Front porches seem to be making a comeback in several north end neighborhoods. After decades of houses that turn their backs to the street and offer the blank bland look of garage doors to the community, there is renewed demand for front porches. A new 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath house on Woodland Park has a huge wrap-around front porch. The builder, Doug Hanson, said buyers are asking for porches and he wanted a design that would fit into the neighborhood. Over in Fremont, the owner of a classic turn of the century mill worker's house included a front porch in the recent remodel job. Anne and Richard Pedd had lived in their small Greenlake house since 1982. They needed a new, bigger house, but didn't want to leave the neighborhood. So they tore down their old house and moved in with the in-laws while a new Craftsman-style home is being built on their lot. It faces the street with a deep porch running 28 feet all the way across the front of the house. Anne grew up in a house with a front porch and wanted to re-create the feeling. Richard says, "We'll go out and sit there in the evening and watch the world go by."
