Summer Theater program for Youth at Greenlake
Jun 29, 2000 --
Seattle Public Theater (SPT) will offer summer theater programs in its new space at the Green Lake Bathhouse for youth who want to make a difference in the world.
Students will collectively create and perform in their own scripts on issues that the students choose themselves. From Theater of Liberation, which fosters the exploration of personal and group creativity, to Diversity Dance Workshop's YouthQuake, which celebrates diversity through movement, SPT offers programs for any student, regardless of experience.
Teaching artists include Leticia Lopez, whose Young Woman Leadership Institute program at the YWCA recently won a KCTS Golden Apple award for Innovation and Excellence in Education.
Program Director Alexis Chamow notes "The Bathhouse space is perfect for a summer program because it is a professionally equipped theater space on the lake, with opportunities for supervised swimming and more outside time than drama camps are usually allowed."
Programs include Creative Drama for kids in grade 3-6, Diversity Dance Workshop's YouthQuake for middle schoolers, and The Play's the Thing and Theater of Liberation for teenagers. Programs range from one to four weeks in July and August. Prices range from $160-$480, depending on the program, and some limited scholarships are available.
Seattle Public Theater has been working with young people since 1988. SPT has taught numerous theater workshops in the schools on topics ranging from recycling to teen violence. A student from Kirkland's Northstar Junior High wrote about her experience: "Even though our play was only twenty minutes long, what I learned will last me a lifetime."
