Thornton Creek Model may help Shape Northgate Future
Model made by Carol Way and a CFLN committee depicts a daylighted Thornton Creek.

Jul 27, 2000 --
Citizens for a Liveable Northgate (CFLN) has created a dramatic model of a revived and rehabilitated Thornton Creek meandering through the property now used as the South parking lot of Northgate Mall. Mall owners are hastily re-drawing plans for an expansion of the shopping center after Superior Court Judge Steven Scott ruled that Thornton Creek exists and has to be accomodated. CFLN and other neighborhood groups are asking the city to locate the new branch library and community center on the banks of a daylighted Thornton Creek. Above, Janet Way explains the model to Bob Messina, Paul Kidder, Louise Landsberry and Jean Wirch. Carol Way and a CFLN committee built the model.

Editors:
Kudos to the Thornton Creek people for demonstrating what some creative thinking could do to help transform Northgate into an attractive and friendly urban area. The area definitely needs a facelift.
It is genuinely unfortunate however, that to date little creative thinking has been advanced by the mall's owner -- and the City of Seattle -- to help realize the vision of an urban community, articulated in the Northgate Area Comprehensive Plan.
I urge our city leaders to step up to the plate and transform Northgate from a sow's ear into a silk purse. It CAN be done. |
