New Utility Poles Cause Confusion

Jul 27, 2000 -- What on Earth is going on with the city light poles in our neighborhood around Northwest 58th Street and 11th Avenue Northwest in Ballard? They're putting in some extra long poles with antennas or lightning rods on the top.

Here is what I found out regarding the tall poles you saw.

City Light spokesperson Sharon Bennett says there are only two new poles that went in—the tall one has the antenna you mentioned. That antenna belongs to CellNet and it's there for Puget Sound Energy, automated gas meter data collection.

City Light rents out space on its poles to 20-30 different companies for special purposes like TV and Internet cables, cell phone systems and a variety of other uses.
