Litter, Weeds Mar Pleasant Fremont Dining Spot

Aug 23, 2000 -- I had dinner at the Triangle Tavern last week, and the food was excellent, but we ate outside in their little enclosure on the sidewalk and we found the surroundings pretty disgusting. Three dead and dying apple trees in wooden tubs had apparently not been watered in months. The planting strip on North 35th Street had been allowed to deteriorate into a gravel-strewn desert, with scarcely a blade of grass showing the entire distance alongside the restaurant. On the Fremont Place side, the sidewalk was littered with cigarette butts, fast-food wrappers and other trash. More trash is lodged in the unkempt, untended shrubs in the planting strip along North 35th Street.

The Triangle uses part of our public sidewalk to seat and feed its customers. It seems like the least they could do is keep the surroundings a little cleaner and more attractive. City law makes it the property owners' responsibility to maintain these areas, but enforcement is very weak.

Another environmentally abused area is in front of Flip Builders at 425 N 36th St. The planting strip is just weeds and litter. Flip's trucks routinely drive up over the curb, destroying what little greenery was there and compacting the soil to rock-hard consistency. Flip apparently makes no effort to keep the area clean and attractive.

Many Center of the Universe businesses do a terrific job of presenting a clean attractive front to the public: The Fremont Building, Bitters Co., Edward Jones, Rudy's and others plant flowers, water their gardens and keep litter picked up.

How about some rakes, water and grass seed, Triangle and Flip owners. Your community will appreciate your efforts.
