Arthur Foss Tug has an Illustrious History
The Arthur Foss.
|
Apr 21, 1999 --
The historic 125' tugboat Arthur Foss has an active summer cruising schedule and is regularly open to the public at the Northwest Seaport at the South end of Lake Union. The Arthur Foss was built in 1889 and towed barges from Seattle to Skagway during the Alaska Gold Rush. In 1933, she starred in the film Tugboat Annie with Wallace Beery and Marie Dressler. She was the last American flagged vessel to leave Wake Island before the Japanese invasion in World War II. The vessel is being restored by Northwest Seaport in cooperation with Bates Technical College in Tacoma, where students do much of the restoration work. For more information, contact Northwest Seaport, (206) 447-9800.

I am currently writing a family history story about my cousin William H. Rothwell who was born and raised in the same little town where I came from, Willow Springs, Missouri. Bill had a 23 year career with the Army but went on to a second career with Foss Tug as a cook. I am wondering if there is anyway to access some information about his job and where the boats he served on may have traveled. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This is not a commercial venture. I do things like this for family and friends but do a respectable job of desktop publishing. Thanks for any assistance you might offer. I know his family would be delighted. Bill retired from Foss in 1986 but died in August of that year. Thanks. |

Had a great time on my short stay with the ARTHUR FOSS out in Lake Union and leared a lot about mini-boat houses too - as in shrink wrapped tugs. If the AF was ever retrofitted, I recon that she and not the Steam Tug BALTIMORE would be not only the oldest but also the last hand-fired coal burning and fully operational steam tug in North America. Oil-fired doesn't count ;) steamtug.org - Away All Lines! |
