Ale Sales Benefit Thornton Creek Restoration Efforts
Sep 06, 2000 --
Thornton Creek flows down from northern Seattle, south and east through the city and into Lake Washington. It also gives its name to Thornton Creek Ale, brewed by the local Fish Brewing Co. Since 1999 Fish Brewing has donated a portion of the proceeds from sales of Thornton Creek Ale to the Thornton Creek Alliance, an organization of citizens dedicated to the rehabilitation of this once-teeming salmon habitat.
Thornton Creek Ale is available on tap at various North Seattle pubs and restaurants.
Fish Brewing Co. also donates part of the sales income from its Wild Salmon Pale Ale to the Save Our Wild Salmon coalition (SOS), and since the beer's release in 1998 has contributed more that $10,000.
The brewing of beer creates huge amounts of strong (alcoholically and organically speaking) waste product. Fish Brewing has recently installed a waste reduction system that diverts the waste beer and yeasty brewing leftovers to a processing facility that produces fish food for commercial sale.
At Oktoberfest this year, Fish Brewing will be serving a special harvest ale and its new-this-year certified organic amber ale.
