Port Angeles Offers the Kalakala a Home

The Kalakala being towed through the Ship Canal to her present home by the Skansonia ferry.
Oct 18, 2000 -- Port Angeles has expressed a strong interest in providing a home port for the Kalakala, the famed art deco ferry boat rescued from an Alaskan mud flat two years ago by Fremont sculptor Peter Bevis.

Bevis told the Seattle Press he met with a "very enthusiastic" group of 25 business and community leaders last week. "They have pier space and they think it would be a great asset to their community," Bevis said.

According to Tim Smith, Economic Development Director for the City of Port Angeles, "We had a good meeting and a standing room crowd of over 30 people. The Chamber of Commerce is taking a group into Seattle next week for further conversations. So far, its strictly exploratory, but a lot of us here are really excited about the idea."
