Scotch Broom Pull at Sand Point October 21

Oct 18, 2000 -- Scotch Broom won't be the only Scottish thing around as volunteers gather for a morning of community and work at Magnuson Park on Saturday. Bagpipers will kick off the day with a rousing ditty at 8:30 a.m., leading the work parties to their sites throughout the park. The morning will be spent digging out the non-native, invasive plants to make way for northwest native plantings. Coffee, sweet rolls and juice will be available for those in need of fortification.

Several non-profits who use space at the former Sand Point Naval Station will be involved, including the NW Native Plant Society, TREEmendous Seattle, PlantAmnesty, Earth Corps and more. Circus Contraption, a circus troupe based at the former base, will make the rounds to the work party sites, providing entertainment breaks to workers.

Participating families will be able to take home a pumpkin, and in the afternoon the kids' cable channel Nickelodeon will provide entertainment for this and other work parties that will take place throughout the city today.

People interested in volunteering should call the Salmon Information Hotline at 1-877-SALMON 9 (toll-free). Volunteers will need to bring their own gloves and a lunch; special "broom-puller" devices will be provided by the Seattle Parks Department. Kids must be accompanied by an adult and have parental permission to volunteer.
