Sunset Hill Community Club Hosts Glitzy Movie Premiere

At the premiere showing, writer/director Jesse Harris introduces members of the cast and crew: (from left to right) Marion Charatan, Jim Moore, Kevin Carrabine, Lauren Marie Holly, Kris Jones, Steve Konz, Rudy Perez and Bud Harrington.
Nov 01, 2000 -- SAM SPUD, The Final Episode opened to rave audience reviews October 13 at the Sunset Hill Community Club. Final Episode is the sixth and last in a series of films made by local writer/director Jesse Harris, a 14-year-old Ballard High School freshman. The movies are short thrillers in a spoof-noir style based on Sam Spade. He made the first at the age of eight. For the first time, he did not star as Sam Spud. Playing the grown-up Sam Spud is Kevin Carrabine of the Sunset Hill Community Association. This is also Jesse's first movie made in association with Harrington Video Productions' Bud Harrington, who he met while taking an acting class. Harrington served as the cinematographer and editor for the project.

Harris began writing Final Episode in September of 1999, figured out his camera shots and locations over the winter, and the movie was shot and edited during July and August of this year. The all-volunteer cast includes friends and neighbors, some of whom have been active in community theater and local TV.

Harris estimates the project cost roughly $400: $200 for production costs and $200 for the premiere event. He hopes to recoup most of the expense by selling copies of the video. Those who missed the premiere showing can check out production photos and order a copy of the video from Harris through his web site, www.members.home.net/rainydayproductions.
