Northgate Resident Recognized for Thornton Creek Action

Nov 30, 2000 -- Bob Vreeland, a Northgate area resident, has been named one of Washington's Five Environmental Heroes by the Washington Environmental Council (WEC) for his efforts to daylight Thornton Creek.

The WEC citation accompanying the award said Vreeland "founded the Thornton Creek Legal Defense Fund to challenge the nation's largest shopping mall developer's plans to permanently entomb Thornton Creek.

"Due in large part to Bob's proactive leadership," the award says, "TCLDF has won the support of dozens of community partners and thousands of citizens, and development of the mall’s south parking lot where the creek flows has been postponed two years. Moreover, Bob's efforts have brought urban salmon issues to the forefront of city politics.

"In true hero fashion, Bob has not backed down from his adversaries and has won several critical battles for urban fish and wildlife."
