Carpenters Protest Safeway Construction Bid Policy

Nov 30, 2000 -- Union Carpenters throughout the Northwest have been picketing Safeway stores to protest Safeway's practice of accepting bids only from a closed list of low-wage, non-union construction companies. The policy contributes to homelessness, the carpenters say, by creating a migrant construction work force with people living out of their cars because they can't afford the rents in areas where they are working. The Carpenters Union asked customers to boycott Safeway until the construction bid practices are changed. Above, pickets proclaimed this message at the new Ballard Safeway on 15th Avenue Northwest and Northwest Market Street.
