Dec 13, 2000 -- Furry Engineers Gnaw Ship Canal Trees

An unknown number of beavers has taken up residence in the Lake Washington Ship Canal in Fremont and have been gnawing on trees along the canal. Two saplings were down on the north side of the water and a 16-inch-diameter poplar was about one-third chewed through. Kevin Li and several other alert readers told us about the beaver attack. Seattle Parks has put protective mesh around some of the trees.

Thornton Creek North Fork Threatened by Developer

A fire in a partly demolished building at Peverly Pond in Shoreline (just downstream of Twin Ponds) on December 2 may have damaged salmon spawning beds in the Thornton Creek. Creek advocates have been carefully watching the building's demolition, along with the planned construction of an Aegis assisted-living facility on the site.

According to Janet Way, chair of the Thornton Creek Legal Defense Fund, Shoreline city officials permitted the developer to begin demolition on the site even though there is a Superior Court appeal pending. Way said, "Permit timing is extremely questionable, since this is still the salmon migration/rainy season and this is an extremely sensitive area where salmon sightings have been documented this year."

Thousands of gallons of water were flushed through the burning building and right into the ponds and creek during several hours of fire fighting.

The Department of Ecology ordered that hay bales be put along unprotected sections of the creek the next morning, and said large equipment must not be used on the site while it was so saturated.

However, neighbors report that the developers continued to dismantle the building while it was still smoldering.
