Carkeek Park to Expand Education Annex
Jan 11, 2001 --
The Carkeek Park community has something to cheer about! By this fall, they expect to turn the existing Education Annex into a "model green building" large enough to accommodate a busload of 60 school children.
The Carkeek Park Watershed Community Action Project obtained funds from the Department of Neighborhoods for the project. The annex, originally designed as a caretaker's cottage, will be enlarged to better serve park environmental programs and other community needs. The expanded building and surrounding landscaping will be designed to demonstrate ways we can conserve water, energy, and natural resources, with an eye toward protecting our salmon populations.
The Building Steering Committee met on Monday, January 8, to introduce architect Geordie Selkirk and Department of Neighborhoods liaison Laurie Ames, and to recruit new members. In the coming months there will be many opportunities for citizen volunteers, both individuals and groups--painters, gardeners, designers, fundraisers, cooks and others are needed for this gigantic building effort. Call (206) 363-4116 to sign up, and become a part of Carkeek Park history!
