Marketime Has New Owners

Jan 24, 2001 -- Marketime, which has sold groceries and beverages to Fremont residents for over 30 years, changed hands at the beginning of the year. Or maybe you could say it was handed back. Vic Kaloper, who started the store with Ken Giles about 30 years ago, sold the store to the sons of his former partner, Steve and Scott Giles and their brother-in-law Bill Stamey. When Ken retired and sold his share to Vic five years ago, Vic's son Brad Kaloper took Ken's place. Now both Kalopers have plans to do something else.

Vic Kaloper started learning the butcher trade over 40 years ago when he worked cleaning up a meat market. To celebrate his retirement, he and his wife Danica went to the 2001 Rose Bowl and took a southern California vacation...their first in many years. Vic plans to spend a lot of time on his cabin cruiser on Lake Union and volunteering as a tutor at B.F. Day School.

Brad is looking for a new career "in something completely, different," Brad says, "...a different atmosphere altogether". His schedule at Marketime was 60 hours, seven days a week. Now he's thinking about high tech, but he knows his five years of co-managing a busy supermarket will prove a valuable asset in his resume.

Steve Giles is very familiar with Marketime. He worked there as a teenager. The partners own Ken's Markets in Greenwood and Queen Anne in addition to Marketime.
