State Senate Seeks Pages

When the Legislature is in session, the state capitol is alive with activity.
State Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle, invites young people ages 14 to 16 to be a part of the action by applying to be a Senate page. A page helps legislators and staff transport documents, responds to requests on the Senate floor and presents the flag during Senate floor sessions.
The senator still has some positions available for the remainder of the legislative session, which is scheduled to run through April 22.
Students page for one week, from Monday through Sunday (Saturday and Sunday only if the Senate is in session) with a two-hour orientation session the Sunday afternoon before the assigned week. Each workday begins at 7:45 a.m. and usually ends at 5 p.m. Housing is not provided, but the Senate can offer assistance in finding a host home.
To serve as a page a student must:
- have a grade point average of C+ or better;
- receive parent and school permission to participate;
- have a Social Security number; and
- be at least 14 years old but no older than 16.
In addition to experiencing the Legislature firsthand, pages meet other students from all around the state and are paid $35 for each day worked.
