Mar 22, 2001 -- A University Village grocery store employee observes a woman acting suspiciously in the beer and wine department on a Saturday at 7:15 p.m. She selects three different kinds of port wine and puts them in her basket. Then she goes to the beer display and chooses two bottles of inexpensive beer, putting them in the basket as well. She then removes the bottles of port from her basket and places them into her purse. When she goes to the checkout stand, she presents only the beer for purchase. The clerk refuses to sell her the beer because she appears to be intoxicated. The employee who saw her with the wine asks her if she has any other merchandise to pay for. She says "no" and attempts to walk out of the store. The employee detains her, and after a short struggle she accompanies him to the store office. A police officer arrives and recovers the three bottles of port wine, which were still in her purse. She admits stealing the port, saying she did it because she is an "alcoholic" and has "no money." She is charged with misdemeanor theft and released...
