Swedish Cultural Center Serves Up Pancakes
May 03, 2001 --
Every month, the sweet smell of pancakes and the uplifting sound of folk music entices people into the Swedish Cultural Center, located at 1920 Dexter Avenue North on Queen Anne.
As you stand in line, thin Swedish pancakes with lingonberries and strawberries are served up with a dollop of whipped cream. Men and women dance to live folk music and others watch and eat. For $6, you get two servings of pancakes, with one slice of ham and a cup of orange juice, milk or coffee.
The breakfasts bring together the community. Living near the Swedish Center for almost three years, I can vouch for that. One of the reasons a former neighbor of mine, who was Swedish, moved into the neighborhood was because she wanted to live near the Center.
The big blue banner that hangs outside the center each time a breakfast is coming up is what brought me in. It brings in new people every month. You don't have to be Swedish, or even a member of the Center, to attend these popular breakfasts. Everyone is welcome.
The next breakfast is scheduled for May 6 from 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
In addition to monthly pancake breakfasts, the Center hosts a Swedish lecture series and folk dancing lessons, as well as a variety of other events. Special guests have ranged from a radio reporter from Stockholm to a Swedish stand-up comedian. The Center also has a restaurant open to members that has a wonderful view of Lake Union.
Upcoming events include ballroom dancing lessons starting May 12 for $5 per person, the 96th annual Svea Male Chorus concert on May 22 and Luau Night on May 26.

I'm sorry your web page is so outdated. I was hoping to find the program for tomorrow's (I think) pancake breakfast.
What time does it start? When is the music? How much? Senior prices? Handicapped? Thank you. |
