Zoo Plans Parking Garage
May 03, 2001 --
In April the Woodland Park Zoo released their long-awaited Environmental Impact Statement and Long-Range Plan--all 250 pages--for public viewing.
The zoo's last long-range plan was drafted in the 1970s. That plan began moving the 101-year-old zoo toward a "cageless" way of life, which has greatly benefited the zoo's 1,100 inhabitants while allowing visitors to glimpse a more realistic view of nature.
This year's plan includes a new parking garage and a "Discovery Village," designed to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the animal-care side of zoo work.
Copies of the Environmental Impact Statement and Long-Range Plan can be viewed at the Seattle Public Library Ballard, Fremont, Green Lake and Greenwood branches or downloaded at www.zoo.org. Copies are also available at the zoo's West Gate office for $15, or by mail ($20) by calling 206-684-4856.
The Seattle Park Board will hold a public hearing on the plan May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Parks Department building, 100 Dexter Ave. N.
