May 17, 2001 -- Now that the sun is out, the city's fabulous Farmers Markets are right around the corner. Located in the U District, Columbia City, and West Seattle, these markets are the best place for city-dwellers to find a wide variety of fresh, top-quality local produce and other farm products at great prices. All markets are "Farmers Only," and feature fruits, nuts, and vegetables, fresh flowers, cheese, honey, free-range chicken and fish, and fresh baked goods and pasta, all from Puget Sound and Eastern Washington.

Struggling farmers get a financial boost from selling direct to the consumer--they can triple or even quadruple their return over selling wholesale to grocery chains, while shoppers still get an exceptional deal. Better still, last season farmers selling at neighborhood farmers markets donated over 13 tons of fresh produce to local food banks at the end of market day.

"Neighborhood farmers markets are more popular than ever," says Farmers Market organizer Chris Curtis. "The three markets alone generated over $1.7 million in sales for local farmers last season, and hosted close to 200,000 shoppers"--and Ballard and Lake City are hoping to get on the bandwagon with neighborhood farmers markets of their own.
