It's Our Birthday

May 17, 2001 -- This issue marks the 16th birthday of The Seattle Press, which started out life as the Fremont Public Association's Fremont Forum in 1985. It also marks the third anniversary of Benchmark Publishing, which bought the paper after it closed in 1998. The relatively long life of this newspaper is due, more than anything, to the unwavering support and loyalty of its readers and advertisers. Thanks to you, we're able to do the work that we love, covering vital news of our neighborhoods and communities, and filling a need that no other medium can fill.

We're fortunate today to have a stellar staff including Managing Editor Sara Longley, Assistant Editor Sara DeBell, Senior Ad Executive Les Neu and Sales Representative Jason Mills. The graphic design team of Barb Levy and Tara Wilde creates our dramatic and colorful appearance. Our regular columnists, including Roger Faris, Cindy Payne, Ted Lockery, Dick Falkenbury, Zach Lyons and Sandy Bradley, are the best of any paper in the city including the dailies.

Today we build on the work of many writers and editors who laid the foundation for the reputation of our paper as a reliable and incisive community chronicle: Trudy Weckworth, Stan Stapp, James Bush, Corinne Hollister, Clayton Park, Wallis Bolz and the previous owners, Terry Denton and Elizabeth White. Everyone who cherishes the vitality of community life in our city should be grateful to these people who have given parts of their lives and pieces of their hearts to putting out this great paper.
