Keep Lilacs Fresh With Margaritas

May 17, 2001 -- You say you love lilacs but they wilt to soon after picking? Here's a tip from professional floral designer Charles Coghlan: hold the stems under alcohol when you cut them, and rub the cut ends with salt before putting the bouquet in water. The flowers will stay fresh for days. Any kind of alcohol will do, Coghlan said. "You can use fine tequila or rubbing alcohol from the medicine cabinet," Coghlan told members at a recent Fremont Rotary meeting. Contact Coghlan at hanadesign@earthlink.net.
