Pigs, more than 75 of them, will parade from Pike Place Market to Westlake Park on Saturday, May 26, accompanied by jugglers, bands and other parade participants. No, the pigs aren't real, they're larger-than-life clones of Rachel, the Market's bronze mascot. Individual artists and groups are decorating them to bring out their pig personalities. The parade starts at 11 and will be followed by entertainment in Westlake Park.
This is the kick-off event for Pigs on Parade, a major fundraiser for the Market. Following the parade, the pigs will be displayed around town at locations sponsored by local businesses. At the end of summer they will be auctioned to the highest bidder, with proceeds benefiting the Pike Place Market Foundation.
Pigs on Parade is also sponsoring a writing contest for those inspired by pigs. Hog haikus and piggy prose will be accepted starting on the parade day and ending on June 16. Winners will have their compositions published in a Pigs on Parade collection which will be available at the end of summer.
For more information about Pigs on Parade, or writing guidelines for the contest, call 682-PIGS or visit www.pigsonparade.org.
