Farmers' Markets Are Back in Season

May 29, 2001 -- On Saturday, May 26, city-dwellers turned out en masse for opening day at the University District Farmers' Market. A bounty of early-season greens, spectacular flowers, and other fresh, top-quality local farm products greeted shoppers strolling in the warm sunshine. All Seattle Farmers' Markets are "Farmers Only," and feature fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts and flowers, cheese, honey, and wild mushrooms, plus fresh baked goods, pasta and more, all from Puget Sound and Eastern Washington.

Struggling farmers get a boost from selling direct to the consumer, while Farmers' Market shoppers also get an exceptional deal. And last season, farmers selling at neighborhood markets donated over 13 tons of fresh produce to local food banks at the end of market day.

Market Locations:
University District Farmers Market (NE 50th & University Way) runs every Saturday 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Now open!

Columbia City Farmers Market (Rainier Ave. S & S Edmunds St.) runs Wednesday afternoons 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. Now open!

West Seattle Farmers Market (on the corner of California & SW Alaska, behind Morton's drug store) runs every Sunday 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., opening June 3.
"Neighborhood farmers markets are more popular than ever," says Farmers Market organizer Chris Curtis. "The three markets alone generated over $1.7 million in sales for local farmers last season, and hosted close to 200,000 shoppers"--and Ballard and Lake City are hoping to get on the bandwagon with neighborhood farmers markets of their own.
