Ballard, West Seattle Monorail Routes Under Consideration

May 29, 2001 -- The Elevated Transportation Company (ETC) is proceeding cautiously but firmly in its mission to develop a monorail plan to be presented to Seattle voters in 2002.

The ETC Board recently decided to focus on a Ballard-to-Downtown route and a West Seattle route as the most likely candidates for initial monorail construction. Three principles emerged from ETC board discussions at a meeting May 14: Keep out of Sound Transit's way; build on work that's already been done; and keep the public informed at all times.

The two routes being considered have the highest potential ridership and the lowest cost per rider of several alternatives considered in the Seattle Transit Study recently conducted by the city.

ETC has begun a public outreach process, contacting community leaders and organizations along the routes under study.

The June 4 ETC Board meeting will be substantially devoted to public comment on the two route proposals and ETC will make its choice on at its July 2 meeting.

"We want to know if Seattle thinks we're headed in the right direction before we commit major resources to this plan," said Tom Weeks, ETC chair.

The June 4 meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers on the 11th floor of the Municipal Building, 600 4th Avenue, at 6:30 p.m.
