Jun 13, 2001 -- From June 14 through July 29, the Nordic Heritage Museum will exhibit 60 paintings by some of the Northwest's finest painters in a show titled Epic Passages in Northwest Art. Epic Passages represents the first-ever joint exhibition by the all-male Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters and the all-female Women Painters of Washington. Mayor Paul Schell has declared June 14 "Epic Passages Day" to commemorate the occasion.

The Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters was founded 72 years ago as a creative outlet for artists employed in less creative fields such as architecture and advertising illustration. Two years later, the Women Painters of Washington was founded on a similar premise--there were no professional openings for women artists in 1931, and female artists weren't allowed into the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters.

Together, these two groups comprise much of the Northwest's art history, influenced in their early years by such important art figures as painters Eustace Ziegler and Mark Tobey, sculptor George Tsutakawa and photographer/painter Myra Wiggins. With the Epic Passages show, the Northwest's finest artists enter the new millennium with their first joint venture.

The Womens Painters of Washington currently supports some 130 professional painters, sculptors, printmakers, designers and craftswomen, showing nationally and internationally.

In conjunction with Epic Passages, members of each group will present three free workshops for teens, to be held at the museum on June 16, July 14 and July 28. Artists will work with teens selected from Ballard High School art classes.

The Nordic Heritage Museum is located at 3014 NW 67th Street, just north of the Ballard Locks.
