Welcome to the new Seattle Press!
Sep 13, 2001 --
The Seattle Press has been a part of north Seattle for many years. Like many of you, I was saddened when it looked like it would come to an end in June. However now, rather than an end, it turns out that it was just taking a summer vacation!
Back in June, upon learning of the probable demise of the Seattle Press, I got to thinking about the role of community newspapers in general and of the Seattle Press in particular. I realized that the Press really did keep me informed about local issues and events in a way that no other paper did.
So I started talking with friends, and pieces started falling into place. To make a long story short, the Seattle Press is back, under new management, firmly committed to the community and the paper!
So what do I want from the Seattle Press? I want the Seattle Press to be a useful newspaper. It should inform about serious issues facing Seattle. But it also needs to recognize that there’s more to life than serious news. It should serve as a guide to events happening in the community. It should be a guide to local entertainment. One could almost say it should be “cheat sheet” for living in Seattle.
In order to provide all of this, we’ll be introducing some new features as well as carrying on some existing traditions. Many of the people involved with the Seattle Press before were enthusiastic about the opportunity to return. So as you thumb through the pages, you’ll see some names that you may be familiar with.
We will also be adding some new features. Some you’ll find in this first issue, including Tara Peattie’s “There from Here,” about local transportation issues. There is also a page devoted to books and fiction (see the call for submissions for short stories!).
Since the primary election is coming up, you’ll find our contribution to it in this issue. Rather than issuing endorsements, we picked a few questions to present to the candidates, and let each respond in his or her own words. Hopefully this will be useful to you in making your choices on September 18. And I think you’ll agree that we’ve got some interesting politics here in Seattle.
Finally, this newspaper has always been about serving the community. Despite the change in ownership, that mission hasn’t changed. Let us know what you like, what you don’t like, and what you miss. You can contact me at david@seattlepress.com, or at:
