Fremont Oktoberfest

Sep 27, 2001 -- It began with an "Oompah, oompah" as a pub crawl led by a tuba band wound through Fremont's bars, ending up at the festival site late Friday afternoon. This is no beer-sodden frat fest, however. It is the Fremont Oktoberfest, a harvest festival that just happens to feature a lot of great beer.

Working hard: beer vendors poured samples nonstop.
Kids and families participated in pumpkin carving and pumpkin racing, climbed on a climbing wall and explored a maze. Also in the Kids' Area was the Thomas Kemper Root Beer Garden, featuring small tables and chairs and, of course, root beer floats.

The Texas Chainsaw Pumpkin Carving Contest (not a kid's activity) made for great spectator sport and splattering, as gobbets of pumpkin goo showered the front rows. The Makita Break Dance Competition had to be seen to be believed.

More than 100 craft and import vendors brought their wares to show and sell--a great opportunity for early holiday shopping.
