Thousands of Seattle area residents are helping in ways great and small to aid victims of September 11's terrifying attacks. Here are just a few ways you can get involved:
United Way of King County has established an emergency relief fund for those affected by the terrorist events of September 11. Those wishing to donate may do so online at www.uwkc.org or call (206) 461-6934. Those in need of services are encouraged to call the Crisis Clinic toll-free in Seattle and King County at 1-866-4CRISIS or (206) 461-3222.
The AFL-CIO has a special web site featuring news on workers who were in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon at the time of the September 11 attacks. The site has links for those who wish to help, as well as ongoing news of the cleanup and rescue efforts. It is at www.aflcio.org.
Carmelita on Greenwood Avenue will serve a special dinner on October 1. Proceeds from the three-course gourmet vegetarian meal will benefit the Red Cross Disaster Fund. The restaurant is located at 7314 Greenwood Ave. N, and the dinner costs $35. Call 706-7703 for reservations.
Jill Bryan, a North Seattle jeweler, created two bracelet designs as her way of raising money for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. She originally made them as a "way of feeling connected...I think it happened to everyone, even if you didn't know anyone there personally. I wanted to use one of my skills to try and raise some money." The bracelets are crafted of sterling silver, garnets, pearls and lapis in a red, white and blue motif. The dangle style bracelet features a silver Statue of Liberty pendant. Both sell for $88, and all profits go to the Red Cross. Visit her web site at www.jillbryandesign.com.
A Mountlake Terrace martial arts school, Richards' Tae Kwon Do, is collecting cash and check donations for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The school is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday at 22803 44th Ave. W in Mountlake Terrace. For information call (425) 775-0299.
Simon Property Group announced that their vast collection of shopping malls nationwide will be collecting donations for the American Red Cross relief efforts. Locally, residents can visit the customer information center at Northgate Mall (206) 362-4778 or at the Tacoma Mall (360) 475-4566 for more information on how to participate.
