Library Buys Ballard Site
Oct 11, 2001 --
The Seattle Public Library has signed an agreement to acquire the site at the corner of NW 57th Street and 22nd Avenue NW. The property is owned by U. S. Bank. Plans call for a new library branch, a neighborhood service center, and a U. S. Bank branch. Design work is scheduled to begin immediately.
One of the site's current occupants is the newly moved Fremont (now Ballard) Sunday Farmers Market. According to market coordinator Judy Kirkoff, the farmers and craftspeople who sell there knew the site was temporary, but hope to stay through the end of next year's season. "We hope to work with the neighborhood council, the chamber of commerce and other residents to get a permanent location," says Kirkoff, adding that the market has had a very warm reception in Ballard and hopes to continue through the winter with crafts, winter crop growers and holiday gift shopping.
To get involved in the designing of the new project, call David Kunselman at (206) 386-4096 or check the Library's web site at www.spl.org.
