Why Peace?

By Kimberly Christensen

The Peace Fairy
Oct 11, 2001 -- On September 29, approximately 1000 women, men and children participated in a march and rally for global peace and justice. Among others, participants included ordinary concerned citizens, representatives of labor unions, political candidates, kids in red wagons, radical women, and war veterans. The parade, organized by the September 11 Peace Coalition, wound its way through downtown Seattle, drawing supporters, curious tourists and hecklers. It culminated with a rally at Piers 62/63, where participants expressed their reasons for marching.
"I want people to think critically about the future of country and ask the critical questions.... I'm [dressed like a fairy] because, like author Emma Goldman said, 'I don't want to be part of your revolution if I can't dance.' With hard times, we need to remember humor. [My costume] diffuses hate. It's brought peace and smiles."

Bill, Spokane, WA
"It's important every day to think about peace."

Vesta, Seattle, WA
"I'm pregnant and I don't want my child to grow up in a world of war. There are other ways to address this situation than militarily, and I want the government to explore those."

Labor unions were well represented in the march.
Mom, Shoreline, WA
"I don't think violence is a good response to violence, and I'm here to show that I don't agree with some of our government's proposed actions against Afghanistan."
