Tent City Moves to Haller Lake

Dec 06, 2001 -- Tent City, the encampment of homeless people that has been a part of more than 18 neighborhoods since March of this year, has moved to a church parking lot located at the corner of First Avenue NE and N 133rd Street. They will live there until January 5.

Tent City is home to up to 100 men, women and children, many of whom are employed and all of whom abide by a very strict, self-imposed code of conduct. Rules include the prohibition of alcohol, drugs, weapons, and physical and verbal violence. In addition, all residents must demonstrate consideration for their neighbors and share in the responsibilities of maintaining a clean, safe environment. In return, Tent City residents gain community, safety and not-so-small amenities such as donated food, bedding and bus passes.

To donate to Tent City, call Phyllis Stevens at (206) 363-3396 or Evelyn Brier at (425) 775-8222.
