Wallingford Steps

Dec 06, 2001 -- Seattle Parks and Recreation will host a public meeting to decide the future of the Wallingford Steps project on Monday, December 10, from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hamilton Middle School auditorium at 1610 N 41st St.

The Wallingford Steps project is a pedestrian connection and public open space in the unimproved Wallingford Avenue street end between N 34th Street and Northlake Way.

Since the initial planning phase, the scope of the project has been changed by a number of issues and circumstances, including increases in the estimated construction cost, unclear delineation of the developers' responsibilities, and the decision by one of the developers to delay construction on his project. The remaining developer's master use permit requires that he build a stairway connection with open space and ADA access. The developer's willingness to participate financially with the City in the construction of the Steps project will have a significant impact on the scope of the project.

At the December 10 meeting, Parks seeks to determine the remaining contractor's financial commitment to the project and the community's support for a modified plan. The project proposed by the Parks would provide access from Wallingford to the Burke-Gilman Trail, open space, ADA access, and structural reinforcement on the undeveloped side of the project.

For more information about this meeting or the Wallingford Steps project, please contact Tim Motzer, Seattle Parks and Recreation at (206) 684-7060 or tim.motzer@ci.seattle.wa.us.
