Ballard Loses an Institution

Dec 20, 2001 -- Pete Economou, owner of the Ballard Smoke Shop, passed away on Thursday, December 13. He was a founding partner of the well-known neighborhood restaurant and lounge, along with his brother Tommy. Pete took care of the restaurant, cooking the food.

"He cooked every morning for 26 years, maybe," said Marsha Erickson, a bar employee for the past 22 years. "One of the brothers was always here."

Erickson called the death "really tragic."

"They are really terrific men," she said. "You couldn't work for anyone better."

Despite the circumstances, the Smoke Shop had business as usual the next day, keeping its 29-year tradition of being open seven days a week.

According to Erickson and fellow employee Bobbi Evans, who has worked there for 28 years, the Smoke Shop is one of the only existing Seattle bars that has never changed ownership.

The memorial service for Pete Economou was held on Monday, December 17 at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church.
