Dec 20, 2001 --
City Councilmember Peter Steinbrueck was unanimously chosen to be the next City Council President. City Council voted on December 17, and will take an "official" vote on the matter on January 7.
The City Council president oversees Council business, presides over meetings of the full council and is charged with ensuring the smooth running of the Council and the Legislative Department. The term of the president is two years.
Outgoing President Margeret Pageler praised Steinbrueck, saying, "I'm very confident Peter Steinbrueck will provide strong and effective leadership." Steinbrueck has been Chair of the Housing, Human Services, Education and Civil Rights Committee for four years.
Also on January 7, the Council will swear in incoming Mayor Greg Nickels and make new committee assignments.
