New Ballard Landmark Proposed

Jan 03, 2002 -- At today's meeting of the Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board, four applications for approval will be considered. The first three are standard requests for signage, curtains, entry changes--the fourth, however, will radically alter the landscape.

The proposal is for Ballard's first Automated Public Toilet, to be sited on the south side of Market Street in the 2200 block. The stainless-steel, black-trimmed structure will be an oval shape, 10' by 11' around, and have internally illuminated symbols for toilet and ADA accessibility near the lighted entrance. Use of the facility will be available 24 hours a day.

The new structure is one of the self-cleaning apparatuses approved by City Council during the summer. The site has already been approved by the Board; at this meeting, it will consider the final design.
