Second Friday Sea Chantey Sing to feature Father-Son Team
Jan 03, 2002 --
A great winter-time activity is to crowd a bunch of people into a small, warm space and have a sing. This exact thing happens every month on the second Friday in the carpentry shop at Northwest Seaport, 1008 Valley Street.
This month, join in the sea chantey sing on January 11, from 8-10 p.m. The carpentry shop is heated with a cozy wood stove, and is located in the middle of the Northwest Seaport yard, west of the beautifully illuminated three-masted schooner Wawona.
The sings are less formal than a regular concert. Although there is always a designated leader, anyone can start and lead a song. The focus is on sea chanties, the work songs used during the great age of sail in the mid-1800s. Other nautical songs are often included as well.
The leaders this time are the father and son team of Captain Dan and Sterling Quinn.
Although there is no formal admission charge, donations in support of Northwest Seaport's many programs be gratefully accepted. Baked goods and hot and cold beverages will be available for purchase.
