Seattle Transportation Discussion: "Are We On Track? Which Track?"

Jan 17, 2002 -- Seattle streets have become like battlegrounds, in a thousand daily private dramas between bikes, buses, cars and pedestrians, as well as in the long-range fight for dollars and space -- bikes versus vehicles, autos vs. transit, buses vs. rail, light rail vs. monorail. (Let's not even mention the issues of sidewalks!) On Tuesday, January 22, University of Washington's College of Architecture and Urban Planning mixes it up with a panel discussion on our options: "Are We On Track? Which Track?"

Moderated by Steve Scher, host of radio KUOW 94.9's Weekday, panelists will be:
  • Alan Thein Durning, Executive Director of Northwest Environment Watch and author of "The Car and the City," and "This Place on Earth 2001: Guide to a Sustainable Northwest"
  • Peter Hurley, Executive Director of Transportation Choices Coalition
  • Diane Davies, Executive Director of Rail Transit Now
  • Emory Bundy, former journalist and Bullitt Foundation Director; co-founder, Sane Transit
  • Maggi Fimia, former King County Council member and past chair of Regional Transportation Committee

Who makes the decisions? What criteria need to be on the table? Can't we all just get along? The event honors the legendary late architect, educator and activist Victor Steinbrueck, who led efforts to preserve Pike Place Market and Pioneer Square. It's part of the College's winter lecture series, "Urban Sustainability: Communities in Action."

The event will take place January 22, 6:30 p.m. in the Architecture Hall Lecture theatre, on the UW campus near the corner of 15th Avenue NE and NE 40th Street. A reception will follow.
