On a Saturday afternoon, an employee of a Ballard grocery store observes a man taking a sub sandwich from a deli display and concealing it in his jacket. The employee stops the man at the door as he is attempting to leave without paying for the sandwich. The sandwich is recovered and police are called. When the officers arrive, the suspect is being held in an upstairs office. A second store employee advises the officers that the thief has twice tried to walk out. The officer handcuffs him to prevent this happening again, then asks the suspect his address. The suspect names an address, but later says his real address is somewhere else. He tells the officer his phone number, but then says he made that number up. He seems very intoxicated and has trouble walking straight. The reporting officer notes that he smells strongly of "intoxicants." The officers transport him to the North Precinct. The man says that, while he was in jail, his live-in girlfriend took all his personal items from his residence. He states further that he was in jail because of a dispute with her that ended with him being arrested for harassment. Since she took his things, he has located some of them at a pawn shop on Aurora Avenue N. He tells the officers that he finally contacted police about the matter because of fear: The girlfriend and three friends of hers, one female and two male, have been threatening to kill him. He did not take the threats seriously until an incident when the female friend "assaulted someone with a hammer and was dancing in the victim's blood." The man tells officers that yesterday the two men told him they were going to kill him. One of the men had his hand in his pocket and pointed it at him as if he had a weapon, and told him that if they did not get him, they would get his children. The officers give him a domestic violence pamphlet and advise him to seek a protection order...
