Where the Smart Folks Hang Out

Feb 28, 2002 -- Lake City holds many treasures. I enjoy wandering about the various antique, second hand and collectibles shops which dot Lake City Way. Some of my favorite such shops are here. One particularly unique shop is Cranium's.

The creation of Nancee Harrison and Leon Johnson, wife and husband, Cranium's offers a little bit of everything. It is an espresso and tea cafe, a sandwich shop, a dealer of collectibles, records and vintage games, a host to live music, and they even plan to rent the small building out back out for twelve-step meetings. Any collectibles shop that has an art-deco Revere letter holder and two copies of the Man From U.N.C.L.E. game, and which is able to serve me a tasty salami sandwich called The Shemp, all while a guy plays live jazz during lunchtime on a Tuesday, is okay by me.

Being a New York and Philly sandwich snob, I usually to cringe at the Northwestern tendency to make creative sandwiches. But Cranium's does it well. The homemade soups are terrific. Mornings they offer the Eggsperiment breakfast sandwich, a design-it-yourself sort of concoction which puts the big boys to shame. As for tea, Nancee stocks 29 varieties.

Did I mention the construction business? Leon converted the old Lake City Fuel Company office into Cranium's himself, and he learned everything the small business owner needs to know to economically comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. He's licensed and bonded, so give him a call if you need help.

Cranium's is located at 12301 Lake City Way NE, 364-1924.
